THE ARCHITECTURE OF CARE: A VISION FOR THE HUMAN AND NATURAL REALM
Architecture is never a neutral act. Every line drawn on paper and every stone placed on site carries a profound responsibility toward the landscape, the community, and the soul of the individual. At Atelier Samuel Quagliotto, we define our Ethos not merely as a set of professional standards, but as a commitment to restoring a poetic, human, and civil dimension to the act of building.
We live in an era of rapid transition, where the urgency of climate change often meets a growing sense of human alienation. In response, our practice seeks an architecture of “slow rigor”, one that values the “monumentality of the everyday” and recognizes that true sustainability is a holistic harmony between environmental health and psychological well-being.
- THE HUMAN BEING AT THE CENTER: BEYOND FUNCTIONALITY
For many, architecture is a matter of solving functional puzzles. For us, functionality is only the baseline. We believe that a space must do more than just “work”; it must “nurture.” Our research into the Scandinavian and Japanese traditions has taught us that the home is a sanctuary for the senses.
Human well-being is deeply tied to the quality of light, the honesty of materials, and the rhythm of spaces. We design for the person who wakes up in the morning and needs the sun to hit a specific wall of wood to feel grounded. We design for the quiet moments of the day. By integrating light, furnishings, and matter into a single, harmonic organism, we aim to reduce the “friction” of modern life. Architecture becomes a form of care, an act of empathy that responds to the physical and psychic needs of the inhabitant.
- NATURE AS AN INHABITANT: RESPECT FOR ALL LIFE
Our respect for Nature extends beyond energy certificates and carbon footprints. We view the natural world as an active participant in the design process, not a backdrop. This vision is rooted in a profound respect for all living beings. In our ethos, the landscape is not something to be conquered, but something to be invited in.
When we design, we consider the ecosystem as a whole. This includes a deep sensitivity toward the animals that share our environments and the biodiversity that sustains us. A building should be a “regenerative place”, a structure that contributes to the health of its surroundings rather than depleting them. We pursue an architecture where the boundary between “inside” and “outside” is porous, allowing the cycle of seasons, the movement of air, and the presence of greenery to become essential tools for healing the spirit. Sustainability, for us, is an act of love toward the planet and every creature that inhabits it.
- BELONGING: THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AS A SOCIAL BOND
Architecture is an inherently collective act. A building never stands alone; it exists within a context, a history, and a community. We believe that the crisis of modern cities is often a crisis of “belonging.” Too often, the built environment feels anonymous and detached from its roots.
Our work investigates the “human scale” of the city. We strive to create buildings that generate bonds, spaces where people can recognize themselves and feel a sense of ownership and pride. By studying the eurythmy of urban space, we seek to bridge the gap between the monumental scale of the city and the intimate scale of the home. Architecture must be a generator of identity; it must be rooted in its cultural context to provide the inhabitant with a firm sense of place in an ever-changing world.
- TRADITION AS THE SEED OF INNOVATION
As a PhD researcher, the study of history is not a look backward, but a way to sharpen our vision for the future. Our work on the Danish master Kay Otto Fisker taught us that tradition is a “repository of wisdom.” It is the study of what has endured because it was well-made, well-thought, and well-loved.
We do not look at history with nostalgia, but with a critical eye, seeking the “extraordinary within the simple gesture.” Innovation, in our Atelier, does not mean chasing the latest technological trend for the sake of novelty. True innovation lies in the intelligent use of natural materials, the refinement of a constructive detail, and the ability to translate ancient tectonic knowledge into a contemporary language. We seek to build “solid, timeless buildings”, edifices that will age gracefully and remain relevant for generations to come.
A HOLISTIC COMMITMENT
Ultimately, the Ethos of Atelier Samuel Quagliotto is about Balance.
- A balance between the intellectual rigor of academic research and the emotional sensitivity of the designer.
- A balance between the needs of the individual and the health of the ecosystem.
- A balance between the global challenges of our time and the local beauty of the materials and traditions we work with.
We invite our clients and collaborators to join us in this experimentation. Together, we can create an architecture that does not just occupy space, but enriches life—fostering a world where the built environment is a source of joy, a vessel for community, and a testament to our respect for the natural world.
